This week we begin our Lenten season with a series entitled “Giving it Up” (thanks to the people at Ministry Matters for the titles and suggestions). Many of us give up certain things for the forty days of Lent, and doing so can be a very beneficial thing for us (like weight loss and banking instead of spending). This five- week series takes that idea one step further and talking each week about things that God wants us to give up, not just for forty days, but forever. That is right –forever.
This week we shall look at the theme of giving up control. Israel had failed in the desert, but Jesus would not. His loyal bond with his Father was too strong for even the demons of the desert to break. Jesus answered the demon voice with the words, “Man does not live by bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew4:4) May we give Jesus our undivided loyalty forever and feast on the one who is the bread of life.
May the ending of the Lord’s Prayer be our Lenten 2017 focus — And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.
